A tender has been awarded for demolition of a deteriorating building in downtown Yarmouth.
At last week’s town council meeting, a recommendation from Delmar Construction was accepted to award the contract to Verhagen Demolition in the amount of $242,000 for 303/305 Main Street.
Mayor Pam Mood says there was more money allocated to complete the demolition project.
“Because it’s not just a matter of taking the building down, it’s making sure the area is safe around it. Council ended up approving $440,000 as the total allocation for demolition,” says Mood.
This will include the adjoining 307/309 Main Street.
Town staff have called the building a ‘construction safety disaster,’ with structural problems inside and outside.
The owner did not reply to a request to begin the demolition process, so the town has taken over.
Mood says it will likely be a few months before demolition can begin.
“It’s a busy construction season, I guess we’re in it now. It won’t be until November before we can get work underway.”
