A number of traps were removed from St. Mary’s Bay by DFO fishery officers while conducting routine high visibility patrols and gear inspections.
In a statement to our newsroom, DFO says more than 70 unauthorized traps were removed from the water.
They say a number of other traps were inspected and were found to be in compliance with the Fisheries Act, including authorized Food, Social, and Ceremonial traps.
The patrols and inspections took place on August 11th.
DFO added that two untagged trap investigations were initiated as a result of separate patrol activities in the area. Those investigations are currently open.
