The Sipekne’katik First Nation has delayed the start of their fishing season.
They planned to launch a food, social and ceremonial fishery tomorrow.
Chief Mike Sack is explaining why.
“For us, we have people who haven’t recovered from the economic loss of it,” said Sack. “We’re just waiting to have more people to go for safety reasons.”
He also discussed when the band plans to start fishing.
“Right away. We weren’t looking forward to delaying at all but there was no plan with the RCMP in place to ensure safety. We couldn’t do it,” said Sack. “We want to be there, we just need to make sure we have enough resources to ensure the safety of everyone.”
He says they hope to have enough people to start fishing sometime next week.
The food, social and ceremonial fishery was announced after the band stepped back from a planned moderate livelihood fishery.
