Canadians may want to hold off on mowing their lawns this month.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has launched Slow Mow May, the goal being helping local bees and pollinators.
Waiting to cut your grass, or doing so rarely and with caution, gives bugs and birds the food they need to thrive, while at the same time allowing bees a strong start to the spring.
Spokesperson from NCC, Jensen Edwards, explains the benefit of late mowing.
“Allowing those green spaces to offer pollinators a chance to access flowers, nectar and foods, and habitats, we’re helping curb their decline. We have seen a steep decline in pollinator populations over the years, due to things such as urban expansion.”
Slow Mow May was adapted from the United Kingdom, where a very similar program has taken off.
