The Nova Scotia government is waving ambulance fees for COVID patients.
An ambulance ride to the hospital typically costs residents $146 but but fees are much higher for people out of province.
Dr. Robert Strang says there have been a number of situations where people with COVID required emergency medical care but they did not call 9-1-1 because they couldn’t afford the cost.
Strang says the province worked quickly with EHS to waive the fee.
Health Minister Zach Churchill says he expects this will be a situation where the system evolves and it could be a move that extends beyond the pandemic.
Meantime, NDP leader Gary Burrill is calling on the Liberal government to waive the fees for all emergencies.
He says people shouldn’t be hesitant to call for an ambulance because they are worried about money.
