The Town of Yarmouth has finalized the sale of the former South Centennial School to BGC Yarmouth, formerly known as Boys and Girls Club.
The sale comes after a presentation to Town Council on April eighth by BGC Yarmouth. At the presentation BGC outlined their brand and plans to repurpose the school.
In a release, the Town says the province turned the building over to the them in 2016, after which it remained mainly vacant, though BGC used the building after a flood at their Bond Street location.
“Ever since we relocated to the school after our flood, I knew it’s potential and since then I have dreamt of the opportunities this space could provide,” said Executive Director of BGC Yarmouth Jodie Pothier.
Renovations will be made to the building including upgrades to the bathroom, replacement of outside doors, replacing damaged or leaking windows and upgrading the old kitchen space to include a brand-new commercial kitchen.
Staff for the Town of Yarmouth have worked to find a new owner for the building, including bringing together a number of local community organizations for a workshop to brainstorm potential uses.
BGC’s Bond Street location will still be used as a daycare center while the school will serve school aged children and up.
“We have been established in the South End Community for 54 years and adding another building in the South End just made sense,” said Pothier. “We are happy and excited about what the future holds for BGC Yarmouth and have been so thankful for the amazing community support.”
Pothier added that the Summer Day Camp will open at the end of June and additional programming will begin in September.
