Starting today, MADD Yarmouth is challenging people to collect littered liquor cans and bottles in their area.
MADD is inviting each community member throughout the tri-counties to participate in the “Sober Up Your Ditches” campaign by walking 1km from their home and collecting liquor bottles and cans along the way.
The campaign was launched after a cleanup that turned up 74 discarded liquor bottles and cans.
Representative for MADD Yarmouth Rick Allwright discussed what the cleanup shows.
“There is plenty of drinking and driving happening within the roads around their houses. It’s a frequent thing,” said Allwright. “You need to assume that they are drinking and throwing the cans and bottles out the window as they’re doing it.”
He says that Earth Day gave them a chance to bring attention to drinking and driving.
“With Earth Day, that’s why we’re putting it out there, to clean up the roads anyway,” said Allwright. “Lets do some cleaning up of the litter and see how bad the problem really is with drinking and driving.”
Pictures from participants can be shared via the “Sober Up Your Ditches” Facebook page.
The campaign runs until May 31st.
