Representatives for MADD made a presentation to the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth this morning and discussed impaired ATV driving.
They recommended that the council provide funds to the RCMP for an ATV, something they say is needed in this part of the province.
MADD representative Rick Allwright discussed their recommendation to the council and said an ATV would help RCMP respond to calls on the trail systems.
“It’s obviously very difficult to patrol the trails. The RCMP doesn’t have access to an ATV on a regular basis,” said Allwright. “Having an ATV in this area, or at least for southwestern Nova Scotia, would go a long way to allowing the RCMP to at least do a little bit of patrolling on the trails.”
He described the current situation the RCMP face on the trails.
“Currently the RCMP basically end up having to just wait at trail heads and hope that they’re able to stop drivers as they’re going by,” said Allwright. “There is no real tool to go back into those trails and search out potential impaired drivers, or any other infractions for that matter. So having that is a major asset for them.”
The council will now have to decide if they want to provide the funds for the ATV.
The MADD representatives also invited the municipal councilors to participate in or sponsor the Strides for Change event which is being held virtually this year.
