The best of the best! That’s what I think when I hear the word Supergroup! A group of musicians that have already made it big in other groups or by themselves! There are a lot of them now but most people credit Cream as being one of the first Supergroups ever! They formed in 1966 and the band consisted of Eric Clapton who was formally of the Yard birds and Jack Bruce of Manfred Mann! A few years later another Supergroup formed. In 1968 Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young started making music together all of them already very popular from their former bands like Buffalo Springfield, The Hollies and The Byrds. Even Led Zeppelin is considered a Supergroup. Lead singer Jimmy Page was from the band The Yardbirds and Robert Plant and John Bonham were from The Band Of Joy!
Those are some early examples but you can really tell how much talent there are in each Supergroup and how almost every one of them has been successful! Some of my favorite bands are Supergroups. The Traveling Wilburys got together in 1988 and had some of the best artists of all time! Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison and Roy Orbison! They were already legends by themselves but decided to just make a couple albums together for fun! The result was extraordinary! They are one of my favorite groups ever!
Another favorite of mine formed in 1985 a few years earlier. These guys were another group of legends and all came together for basically a jam session and ended up making a couple great albums! The Highwaymen. This band featured Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash! Amazing artists! They made amazing music together! Those are a few of my favorites but there are tons more!
Both of those groups in particular have changed my life forever! That seems like I’m exaggerating a bit but it is true. Some of the best bands in the world are Supergroups at least in my opinion! Who is your favorite Supergroup? check out a full list of all the most popular Supergroups HERE!
