One local elected official is looking to the silver lining in a year that was, at the best of times, quite unconventional.
West Nova Conservative MP Chris d’Entremont told Y95 News in a year-end interview that despite the COVID-19 pandemic derailing our lives, it gave many people – including his family – an opportunity to spend more time with one another.
“In the context of the Atlantic Bubble, you know, people were travelling locally,” he said. “Maybe they were spending more time at home, maybe they bought a camper, maybe they did some RVing, maybe they went to the cottage a little more,” he explained. “A lot of family stuff happened this summer, which I think is very positive. I know in our particular case, we did a little more camping.”
d’Entremont also joked about the learning curve for working from home, “Is this mic on?”, before flagging learning to work remotely as another positive outcome.
He says some of the challenges encountered in 2020 included trying to bring constituents’ concerns to Parliament, as well as trying to shed light on the lobster fishery dispute in St. Mary’s Bay.
“I think the biggest challenge though, for folks beyond the government side of things, was job losses, businesses closing, especially when it comes to some entrepreneurs, restaurant owners, those kinds of businesses that really experienced a lot of difficulty.”
When it comes to goals for the New Year, the MP kept it simple: getting infrastructure projects, such as wharf improvements, rolling again.
