The Salvation Army’s main fundraiser for the year isn’t coping well this holiday season.
With just two days to go, their Kettle Campaign is down more than $250,000 across the Maritime provinces.
The campaign and the Salvation Army have seen its fair share of challenges during 2020, causing for less funds to be raised, said Major Jamie Locke, divisional secretary for public relations.
“With less kettles in stores and tighter restrictions in many cities, we simply are not raising the funds we need,” he said.
The campaign had a regional goal of $1.8 million, which was earmarked for individuals and families needing food, shelter, support programs and Christmas assistance.
Last year, they supported more than 56,000 people across the Maritimes. This year is set to surpass that.
“People are turning to us that have never had to ask for help before,” says Locke. “They need us now and we need the support of Maritimers who can donate.”
To cope with the changing times and increasing restrictions, the Salvation Army has tried to adapt their campaign as well as they could, adding touchless, digital donating as well as online donations.
However, with only two days left of the campaign, how well it will make out is up in the air.
