Yarmouth Mayor, Pam Mood, says it was a tremendously difficult decision to cancel the 100 Meals in 100 Days program this year, but a decision that was needed to keep people safe.
Some have suggested a take-out model to keep the initiative going but Mood says there are concerns with that idea.
“Regardless of whether you sit down and eat a meal or have take out, volunteers need to come together in a place. They have to cook, they have to shop, they have to do exactly the same thing,” said Mood. “Places that we had secured are unable to do that. We have to respect that they have to follow protocols.”
This initiative is one the mayor has been proud of but she says that safety has to come first.
“It was a really difficult call, but it was the right call,” said Mood. “It’s safety first and we have to follow protocols.”
She says that there is a chance the initiative could continue in the new year if the safety concerns are taken care of.
