The province has committed $1.5 million to the Lebanese Red Cross to help those affected by the devastating explosion in Beirut.
The explosion, which occurred in a warehouse at the sea port on August 4, left a huge crater 140 metres wide. The noise from the blast was so loud it was heard 200 km away on the island of Cyprus.
It is reported that ammonium nitrate was stored in the warehouse.
Initial numbers say the blast killed 137 people and injured about 5,000 others. In addition about 300,000 people are temporarily homeless.
Those numbers may change.
In a statement released Friday, Premier Stephen McNeil said we are all seeing the devastating impact of the tragedy in Beirut.
“The Lebanese community has deep roots in Nova Scotia. Our hearts go out to Lebanese-Nova Scotians, their families and loved ones and all those affected by the explosion. We stand with you and are keeping you in our thoughts.”
Canada is contributing up to $5 million in humanitarian aid to Lebanon, including the $1.5 million to the Lebanese Red Cross.
