RCMP say charges are pending against a 21-year-old Shelburne man after last night’s fire on Mowatt St.
They say the man intentionally set the fire inside a seniors’ home last evening following what was reported initially as a dispute.
Corporal Jennifer Clarke says the man was behaving erratically, which escalated to the point where he poured gasoline in the apartment he was visiting and in the hallway of the building before lighting it on fire.
“The person who is alleged to have set the fire, we believe he’s in critical condition at this point. We’re looking at laying charges of ‘Arson Causing Danger to Life’ in relation to this incident.”
RCMP members on the scene administered first aid to some residents and the suspect, until paramedics arrived.
“Once we get an update on the individual’s condition, then we’ll proceed with the investigation, but the important thing to know is that all 29 residents got out okay. There is significant damage to the seniors home, localized to one sort of corner of the building.”
The suspect was transported to hospital for treatment of what are described as “life threatening injuries”.
