Incredible efforts all around following an incident in Belleville on Sunday afternoon.
Eel Brook Fire Chief Jonathan LeBlanc says the fire department was initially called about a smoke sighting in a wooded area off Eel Lake around 4:00 p.m.
LeBlanc says it was a hard-to-access area for crews due to the sheer density of wood and deadfall.
When crews arrived, they heard someone calling out for help, and the firefighting mission turned to a rescue.
Crews extinguished the blaze in the immediate area and then called for support to rescue an injured 78 year old man.
Crews from Lake Vaughan Volunteer Fire Department, EHS, Yarmouth Rural RCMP, and the JRCC all responded.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre sent a Cormorant helicopter to airlift the man out of the bush.
He was flown to Yarmouth Regional Hospital in weak but stable condition.
Aid also came from the province’s Lands and Forestry department, who dispatched helicopters to douse any potential hotspots.
The cause of the fire isn’t known.
