After putting a fair bit of money into enhancing beaches and budgeting for a lot more to come, people in the Stoney Island area awoke last week to find someone had driven all over part of their beach.
Municipality of the District of Barrington Warden Eddie Nickerson, who also happens to represent that area, says this has been happening for year but there’s a good chance they’ll install cameras down there.
“It can serve two purposes, it can be security and it can also show the pristine beach and have a nice ocean view, so I think that’s something that the Municipality will be pursuing.”
The Warden they will be fixing the damage to the area before the enhancements are done.
“I think the costs are going to be very minimal, it’s just a bit of grading and topping stuff up and getting it level again so you don’t have a “whoop-de-doo” bumpy ride when you’re going through parking lot.”
He says they are moving forward with other plans to stop joyriders.
“Once we get the parking lot fenced in, or cordoned in with 8 x 8 posts up with 4 x 8 bumpers on them, that will slow it down, if not virtually stomp out. It’s going to be very hard to spin around the parking lot when we’re finished.”
Warden Nickerson says the damage looks like it was caused by a four-wheeler but authorities don’t have any leads right now.
The enhancements to beaches all over the municipality are part of the plan to bring tourists to the area.
