Open and closed Yarmouth parks
The first weekend with eased restrictions went fairly well in Yarmouth.
Mayor Pam Mood says the province left it up municipalities as to what did and didn’t open.
“They gave us permission to open up…if we thought that was okay, so the Town of Yarmouth did open some but we also kept some closed and, of course, we all know that if there is a playground in the area, then those parks remain closed; there’s cross-contamination on playground equipment.”
The Mayor says they will keep playgrounds closed for a while longer to ensure safety and that they are monitoring to make sure people continue to observe physical distancing.
She says the wet weather may have kept a number of other people away but many others took advantage of parks being opened and followed the restrictions that are still in place.
“We’re just monitoring everything and, as much as we’re excited about this, we just want to understand that, if the social distancing measures are not kept, then we will close everything right back up; we do have permission to do that.”
Mayor Pam Mood says there are various reasons for what was and wasn’t opened to the public.
“First and foremost, playground equipment, those will remain closed; but the second piece is that some sports fields…it’s wet, anybody that’s going to get on those, they’re probably going to be ankle-deep in water or mud anyway, so we’re keeping those closed and we will open things as quickly as we can.”
Mayor Mood says many of the sports fields don’t normally open until at least mid-May and sometimes later, depending on the weather.
