A long-running tradition in the Municipality of Clare has prompted officials to issue a strong message.
The Canoe Trip social gathering has been happening every Easter weekend since 1973 and typically attracts massive crowds.
Warden for the Municipality of Clare Ronnie LeBlanc says with the province under a state of emergency due to COVID-19, now isn’t the time to be gathering.
“If there was any way we could cancel it we would have,” he explains. “It’s not a municipal event nor is there a committee or a board that runs the event either. The only we could really address it is through a statement that discouraged people from participating.”
LeBlanc says the event is on law enforcement’s radar as it has been in previous years, and he anticipates authorities will be patrolling the area.
He notes that most of the feedback he’s received so far has been in agreement with the municipality’s decision.
