There are now 127 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nova Scotia.
Five new cases were identified on Monday, with public health conceding that one case is the result of transmission within the community.
Chief medical officer of health Dr. Robert Strang says the case is a person who attended a Saint Patrick’s Day party in Lake Echo but no one else from the party has tested positive.
“So our only conclusion can be that the individual who attended that event, who is now being known as a case of COVID-19, must have been exposed somewhere else, and we can find no evidence to of any links to a known case or to travel.”
He believes we will see many more of these cases.
“The cases we see today, the exposure happened a week to two weeks ago. There’s that fourteen day incubation period. Most people, within about a week of being exposed, come down sick, sometimes it’s longer, up to two weeks. So the cases we see today, their exposure didn’t happen yesterday, it happened one to two weeks ago.”
Four people are currently in hospital, while ten have now recovered and their cases of COVID-19 are considered resolved.
To date, Nova Scotia has had 5,054 negative test results.
