The site of a tragedy in Yarmouth County is being transformed. A house fire in Pubnico Head killed four young children in 2018.
It is now the location of the Windjammer Park and Memorial Site and Donna Larkin, director/treasurer says the name holds great significance.
“The name reflect the first letters of all four children’s names. Under the W is Winston (Prouty), the J is Jayla (Kennedy) under one M is Mason and under the other M is Mya.”
She says the project brings some healing.
“The entire community was devastated. Everybody in our community loved those little children dearly. When we talk about it today, there’s still tears in a lot of people’s eyes.”
She says the children’s families are very pleased to see something going on the property and the community, residents and businesses, have been very supportive.
Signage and fencing has been installed and four memorial benches in place, each bearing the children’s names and photos.
There’s an online auction to raise funds for playground equipment.
