Council for the Municipality of Barrington is reviewing some initial amendments to its Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS) regarding the production of cannabis.
The changes to the MPS and Land Use Bylaw were proposed by the Planning Advisory Committee following the first public consultation meeting earlier this month and the public process will continue before council adopts any changes.
CAO Chris Frotten says it’s primarily an educational process about the legalization of cannabis.
“On how it impacts municipalities in terms of development and zoning, and then we try to explain how it fits currently in our planning documents, and what the amendments are trying to achieve,” he said.
Frotten says Monday night, council agreed to move forward with the amendments and continue to engage residents.
“So that would initiate more advertising and publishing of the idea of implementing these regulations and there would be another opportunity for the public to give their opinion in a public hearing that will be scheduled in the next couple months,” he said.
Frotten says about half a dozen people attended the first public meeting on August 22.
