It’s located on the site site of the former Milton School.
About 100 people attended Sunday’s official opening.
David Sollows, principal of the school in the 90s, says Doug was the long-time caretaker but was more than to the many staff and students over the years.
“He cared for the people within the school. Before any staff got here, he would have the coffee on. Doug set a very, very high standard for building maintenance. If you were a teacher and your pencil sharpener broke that afternoon. It would be fixed the next morning. He would watch for the little things it took to the run a school smoothly.”
Speakers at the opening ceremony yesterday talked about how Doug Melanson knew everyone at the school by name and, especially knew who needed a smile and a kind word.
Jean Clulee, chair of the Doug Melanson Park Committee, says a lot of work went in to the fundraising and then the building of the park, most of it by volunteers.
The Milton Improvement Society took the lead in planting trees and much more.
The Town of Yarmouth also supported the project.
