There is a critical shortage of Type O negative blood across Canada.
Canadian Blood Services (CBS) is urging donors in southwestern Nova Scotia and along the South Shore to roll up their sleeves and give.
CBS spokesperson Peter MacDonald says while only 7 percent of Canadians share this blood type, that small percentage has a huge impact.
“O Negatives are the universal donor. So in any type of urgent situation in a hospital setting where there’s not an opportunity to cross-match and find a person’s blood type, any recipient can receive O Negative blood.”
Collection clinics take place Tuesday (Aug 27) in Liverpool at the Best Western and Wednesday (Aug 28) at the Best Western in Bridgewater.
The week of September 16, CBS hosts clinics in Barrington Passage, Yarmouth and Clare.
