It was determined that the current building, built in the mid 50’s, had become structurally unsound due to several renovations.
Fire Chief Jonathon LeBlanc says the land has been acquired, existing buildings removed, topsoil cleared and topical and legal surveys completed.
“The architects are currently preparing a set of presentation-quality drawings for us as well as finishing off the site plan. Once we have all that information, we’re going to approach the province and the federal government for funding.”
The Municipality of Argyle has approved $200,000 over the next two years.
LeBlanc says the architects will provide a revised cost for the project, originally estimated at $2 million. They’ll soon be able to put it out to tender.
He says the site of the new facility is only a half a kilometre from the current fire hall, on the Eel Lake Road.
“When you turn off the highway, at the Belleville intersection, we’re just on the other side of the causeway. It puts us in the great location because we’re right between the new highway and the old highway. we have easy access to get pretty well anywhere in our district.”
Chief LeBlanc says the Eel Brook and district Volunteer Fire Department is in the process of starting an auxiliary.
“We’re looking for anyone who may be interested in helping us with that as part of our fundraising group.”
Anyone interested can call him at 902-648-7682.
