Department of Federal Fishery officers from the Meteghan detachment are out on the water this week
They’re aboard the vessel Cape Light, in St. Mary’s Bay checking lobster traps for compliance.
Spokesperson Noel d’Entremont tells us what they’re looking for.
“Anything to do with lobster traps. So we’re making sure that they’re properly tagged, that the escape mechanisms are proper on them, we’re looking for stainless steel hog rings. Anything that;’s going to make sure that trap is legal”
He says if lobster traps are found not to be in compliance with the regulations, fishery officers are removing them from the water for further investigation that could lead to prosecution.
“These mechanisms support a strong lobster fishery and we encourage all harvesters to obey the regulations.”
