
The 8th annual Yarmouth Seafood and Wine Extravaganza has added a different flavour this year.
Extravaganza Society president Carole Hill-Bojarski says this year it’s called a Twist of Jamaica.
“We had, over the past year, had the opportunity to bring several chefs here to Yarmouth to visit with us and to have a cultural exchange. These events will be taking place in September. In August we decided to have a ‘Twist of Jamaica and we invited restaurants and participants to use a ‘twist of Jamaica’ in preparing food and getting ready for the cultural exchange in September. In southwest Nova this event started as a celebration for fishers and for the hospitality that has always been second nature here. In the past we always had folks who came from away mainly for our seafood and hospitality. It was time to bring the world back here, without losing our seafood and hospitality.
She says in September after the tourism folks from Jamaica and the three chefs arrive, we have planned several events starting with ‘On The Rocks which takes place just below the Cape Forchu lighthouse on the rocks.
“We are going to be cooking out there, we’re going to have Reggae music, out story tellers, both Acadian and Mi’kmaq. and guided tours of Leif Erikson Park and more.”
Next year Hill-Bojarski says in 2020 Jamaica will be back and Italy will be added to the tasty and cultural repertoire.
THIS WEEK:
On Friday August 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. you can enjoy a fantastic meal, with a Twist of Jamaica of course, and support the VON with their Surf or Turf Dinner in a tent on the Yarmouth waterfront. (Tickets are available at the VON office)
On Saturday you can sample of some local favourites at the Seafood Splash on the Waterfront on Saturday. Staff and volunteers will be cooking up regional specialties, like seafood chowder, steamed clams, and BBQ shark. Entry tickets can be purchased at the tent on the day. Sunday August 11th features the main event – the Yarmouth Seafood and Wine Extravaganza at the Rodd Grand Hotel from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
