The nurse and humanitarian was originally from Yarmouth County.
David Chowny, co-chair of the Sara Corning Society, says she is widely regarded as a heroine for her efforts in rescuing and caring for thousands of orphans during her 11 years of service in Armenia, Turkey, and Greece between 1919 and 1930.
“The Armenian community thinks so much of Sara that they’ve named a Sara Corning Centre For Genocide Education in Toronto.”
Society co-chair Jennifer Rodney-Chown says there are several plans to honour Sara, including the restoration of the headstone on which Sara Corning’s name is inscribed.
“There’s going to be a memorial park at the Chegoggin cemetery and we hope to have a nursing scholarship in Sara Corning’s name.”
The bronze statue of Corning will be located behind the Yarmouth County Museum, on the property where Zion Baptist Church once stood.
She says the headstone which Sara Corning’s name is inscribed on is being restored.
The statue will be located in the green space that was once the site of Zion Baptist Church.
The unveiling is set for September 14th.
The day will also celebrate her legacy with a play at Th’YARC about her amazing life.
