The new van for Veteran's Place
Veteran’s Place took possession of their new accessible van yesterday during a ceremony at the facility.
Don McCumber, Royal Canadian Legion District Commander, was the chairman of the fundraising committee and he tells Y95 News they worked hard to raise the money because of a bit of a delay in the start of the campaign.
“It’s taken over a year now. We started in the Spring of 2018. There were other fundraisers that were going on in the community and we certainly didn’t want to put this campaign on in the midst of another campaign, so we waited until the appropriate time and then we announced that we were raising funds for the veteran’s van.”
He says many donors stepped up to help acquire the van.
“The community backed the project right from the start and the Legions and many associations and individuals in the communities called in, they dropped cheques off here at Veteran’s Place, so the community was VERY supportive of this project”
McCumber says the local branches of the Royal Canadian Legion really came through, including a former Legion.
“There are five Legions in our zone: Yarmouth, Wedgeport, West Pubnico, Cape Sable, and Lockeport; and we also had Port Maitland Legion, even though they had closed, they had a considerable amount of money in their account and they turned it over to us for the van. We were very pleased with the past Legion members of Port Maitland”
The van is for use in the area from Yarmouth to Lockeport.
