The Town of Shelburne is doing what it can to persuade people not to camp in parking lots.
The town has posted ‘No Camping’ signs at specific spaces that have been frequented by campers.
Mayor Karen Mattatall says it has become an issue with many residents.
“The issue isn’t so much if someone arrives late at night and they don’t know where the camping areas are. But, it was getting to the point where we were having some people come and treat it as a campground and spend multiple nights.”
Mattatall says like other communities, their parking spaces and lots are at a premium and shouldn’t be taken by campers.
She says there are local campgrounds to use for a reason.
“We have a beautiful campground across the harbour, in the area there are local people who have campgrounds and it is a parking lot and it really isn’t intended for camping.”
Mattatall says anyone who decides to camp in parking lots will be politely asked to leave.
If that doesn’t solve the problem, she says their by-law officer could issue fines.
