With the MHL draft coming up this Saturday, the Yarmouth Jr. A Mariners have announced their territorial pick, going with the NS Major Midget Hockey League’s Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year, Ryan Semple of Lower Wedgeport.
Mariners head coach and GM Laurie Barron tells CJLS Sports they are very happy with the pick.
“We’re real excited to have him aboard, he had a real good year with the South Shore Mustangs, led them in scoring and, in talking to the coaching staff, they have nothing but good things to say about him as far as leadership and overall work ethic”
Barron tells CJLS Sports they think Semple can play for the Mariners right away.
“Our scouts have watched him during the year and we think he’s ready to play junior hockey. He’s physically very fit and we like everything that he brings to our club.”
The team will also be announcing some free agent signings over the week, starting with forward Caleb Garrett of Okotoks, Alberta from the International Hockey Academy.
Barron says Garrett, who led his team in scoring last year with 24 goals and 16 assists in 36 games, can play all 3 forward positions but they’re looking at him as a centre.
