We are encouraged to talk about mental health today.
The goal is to remove the stigma sometimes associated with mental illness.
Dr. Barry Wiser (weezer) is a psychologist and team leader for adult mental health services in Yarmouth.
He says the Nova Scotia Health Authority has many comprehensive services available to those seeking help.
Dr. Wiser tells CJLS News those include outpatient services at hospitals in Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby and at the health centre in Meteghan.
“They’re staffed by a multi-disciplinary team, psychiatry, psychology, clinical therapist, social workers, OT, community support workers, adolescent outreach workers.”
Dr. Wiser says there are services available 24/7 and are accessed through the emergency department.
“If someone came in overnight, they would be assessed. There is a mobile crisis line, which is also available 24/7 and there would be someone available to talk with them.”
The Mental Health Crisis Line can be reached 24/7 by calling 1-888-429-8167.
