At 10 o’clock this morning fire dispatch services at the Yarmouth Fire Department were switched over to Digby Dispatch,
The service is operated by the Municipality of Digby and is located at the Digby-Annapolis Regional Airport in Hilgrove.
Supervisor Bruce Snell tells CJLS News the dispatch centre is a completely stand-alone building.
“It’s fully back-up generator powered, which kicks in automatically should power go down. There’s also various back-up facilities within this establishment plus we have another facility in the town should we have to evacuate this one.”
He says Digby Dispatch has a computerized mapping system
“Which will currently locate an address, as well. With our input of an address it goes straight on to a map and tells us exactly which fire department to go to and, if necessary, we can give them directions to get to that location.”
The town of Yarmouth says the move to Digby dispatch will cost it approximately $5,600 a year, compared to the net cost of $160,000 it spent on its dispatch services last year.
The service cost provided by Digby dispatch is based on call volume.
