It was probably the last thing that Brandon Surette needed.
The 19-year-old lobster boat captain could do nothing as he watched a fishing vessel that he was leasing sink at the wharf in East Pubnico last night.
He had just started the engine when the wet exhaust malfunctioned, blowing an 8-inch hole in the stern of the ‘Extreme 1’.
They had just finished loading 300 pots aboard the boat.
Surette spoke with CJLS News last night.
“There’s a few boats there. They were plugging up the holes. They had a few boats there with those big PullMasters, and the booms, but she’s a write-off.”
Surette, whose recovering from surgery, says another fishermen reached out to help him with a boat he can lease.
“Robert Amirault, he really stepped forward big time to help me. That’s the best part of it in this community. There’s always someone there willing to help out. That’s what I really appreciate it.”
Surette has a new boat being built.
