The tragic death of a young woman from rural Nova Scotia was not in vain.
The memory of Maddison Fraser from Yarmouth County is being remembered as part of the ‘Shine The Light On Women Abuse’.
The 2018 national campaign was launched by the London Abused Women’s Centre in Ontario.
Maddison Fraser became involved in the sex trade at the age of 19.
She died two years later in a car crash in Edmonton in 2015 alongside the impaired driver, a sex purchaser.
Maddison’s mother, Jennifer Holleman, continues to tell her daughter’s story to raise awareness of the sex trade.
She tells Acadia News, at first she was angry because of the lack of help from police and the opening and closing of two separate investigations.
“I knew that I couldn’t stay angry. It wasn’t getting me anywhere, so I need to reroute this anger and frustration and turn it in to something positive.”
Holleman says that her daughter lives on through her legacy.
“And I always maintain that if I could help one young woman get un-involved in this lifestyle that would be my daughter’s life right there. I know, in my heart of hearts that I’ve helped many more than just one.”
Holleman says Maddison has become the face of change where more people are talking about the sex trade and are no longer pretending it doesn’t exist
She says the sex trade is very active not just in large cities, but in small communities as well.
