Despite legalization being just around the corner, it remains to be seen what type of policy will be put in place for RCMP members using recreational cannabis.
Earlier this month the Department of National Defence released their formal policy, which permits usage by members but with some tight restrictions.
We reached out to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s national media branch, but they’re staying mum on the details.
A spokesperson said in an email they’re finalizing the policy and that it will be established to ‘maintain public safety and a safe workplace.’
She says all officers must be fit for duty when reporting for work, which includes not being impaired by a substance.
The policy will be in effect on October 17 and the spokesperson says it may be updated or evolve over time.
“The RCMP will continue to review the scientific research and legislation as it evolves and will update the policy as required,” reads the email.
She did not respond to questions on whether the document would be made public.
Acadia News was declined an interview on the topic and we have filed a Freedom of Information Request.
Recreational cannabis will be legal October 17, 2018.
