RCMP members across Nova Scotia are paying tribute to one of their own today.
Today marks one year since Constable Frank Deschênes died while on duty with RCMP Northwest Traffic Services in Amherst.
Deschênes was killed when he stopped on the highway near Memramcook, New Brunswick to help a motorist change a tire.
RCMP members across the province are holding checkpoints and passing out information about both Deschênes and drivers’ responsibilities under the “Move Over” legislation.
Police are hoping to educate drivers while also paying tribute to a fallen friend and colleague.
The Move Over legislation is a recent amendment, also known as Frankie’s Law.
It makes it an offence to drive faster than 60 km an hour when passing a stopped emergency vehicle or tow truck with lights flashing.
Motorists also must change to the lane farthest from the stopped emergency vehicle, if that lane is free and it is safe to do so.
