To mark the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a service will be held in Yarmouth honouring firefighters and other first responders killed in the line of duty.
The Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial takes place this Sunday (September 9) at 10 a.m. and will be presided over by Rev. Bill Newell.
All firefighters, first responders and the public are invited.
Yarmouth Fire Department spokesperson Stewart Deveau says it begins with the lowering of the flag to half staff then at 9:55 firefighters and first responders will march to the monument in front of the fire hall.
“Reverend Newell will have an opening prayer, we’ll have the playing of the Canadian and American national anthems, the Last Post, the Moment of Silence, then Reveille then the laying of wreaths, the signing of Amazing Grace then the benediction. After the conclusion of the ceremony there will be refreshments served inside the fire hall.”
Deveau says the service was initially held to honour those killed in the attacks in the U.S. then it evolved as a way of paying tribute to all fallen firefighters and first responders.
It’s an outdoor service but if it rains it will be held inside the fire hall.
The Yarmouth Fire Department will honour victims of the 9/11 tragedy tomorrow (Sunday) with the Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial.
At 9:46 a.m. Atlantic time on Sept. 11, 2001, the first in a series of coordinated attacks happened as American Airlines flight 11 crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in Manhattan.
A second plane crashed into the south tower, a third into the Pentagon and a fourth crashed to the ground outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
About 3,000 people lost their lives when the Twin Towers collapsed.
