This is a big day for the Tri-County Women’s Centre in Yarmouth. More importantly, for victims of sexual assault.
The centre has launched the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program (SANE) and is funded by the Nova Scotia Health Authority
The centre’s executive director, Lisanne Turner says the program aims to respond to many aspects of the individual’s needs, including physical, psychological, social, and legal through a team approach.
“They’re able to attend to the physical care of the survivor or victim, they’re able to collect evidence in case the individual wishes to file charges with the police and they’re able to make referrals to other agencies or organizations. By all survivors and victims we mean anyone of all genders and those who are non-gender conforming.” A recent sexual assault means within the last 120 hours which is about five days for those who are 13 years of age or older.”
Someone wishing to access the SANE nurses can call 1-833-577-SANE (7263) or go to the Yarmouth Regional Hospital Emergency Department.
