The annual Parkinson SuperWalk is being held Sunday September 16 in Yarmouth starting at Frost Park.
Yarmouth resident Rita Fitzgerald, who is living with the disease will be taking part in her second SuperWalk.
Fitzgerald says she wants to share her story with others and create awareness.
“People being aware of what you’re going through will help you in the long-run if you have Parkinson’s because they’ll know more how to help and support you. You worry that it will progress fast and that you’re going to end up in a wheelchair or people are going to have to help you. You can’t be shy. You have to accept it.”
Fitzgerald says the disease forced her to retire early.
She says many share their stories at a Parkinson’s Support Group in our area, they meet monthly.
On average, 25 Canadians are diagnosed each day with Parkinson’s disease.
