Arcadia School officially belongs to the Yarmouth Arts Regional Council.
In a ceremony at the former school yesterday, the sale and transfer was completed.
Already, work is being done to turn the building into not just an arts centre, but an area for the community.
YARC president Mitch Bonnar says community groups will begin using the building almost immediately.
“In the wintertime, the heating bill would blow your socks off. We need to find sources of revenue to cover that. We’re not trying to make money, just cover the bills.”
The area in front of the building is being used as a temporary dog park, and the Tri-County Roller Derby club will be using the former gym inside the school.
“We’re going to do everything we can to utilize this building to its full potential.”
Bonnar says fundraising and donations will also play a role in getting the centre up and running.
Plans for the building include the addition of two theatres totaling 10,000 square feet.
