The public is getting its first look at the latest review into Nova Scotia’s forestry practices.
University of King’s College president Bill Lahey released his report this morning.
In it, Lahey calls on the province to put environmental concerns first.
That forms the basis for the 45 recommendations he made.
Some of those include:
Fully implementing the Nova Scotia Endangered Species Act in forests on both crown and private land – it currently is not.
Adopting new regulations prohibiting full tree harvesting when combined with clearcutting.
And balancing the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity with other objectives.
Lahey says ecosystems and biodiversity are the foundation which other values including economic ones depend on.
We’ll have more from the report and reaction from the Minister for Lands and Forests later this afternoon.
