The Municipality of Yarmouth wants to hear from residents about green carts.
Specifically, how many people would be willing to pay a higher tax rate to fund weekly pick up of green cart materials.
CAO Victoria Brooks tells explains what prompted the survey.
“One or two of the councillors had received some enquirers from residents about what might be involved in considering extra pick-up for green carts, given some of the challenges around maintaining good practices in order to keep green carts clean and manageable.”
Brooks says the survey will be up on the Municipality of Yarmouth’s Facebook page for a week or two.
“The survey seeks to find, number one, who has an interest in paying for extra pick-up, number two, at what level would residents be interested in paying that extra price. Then we just asked a question to confirm if respondents lived in the District of Yarmouth, just as a means to ensure that any decision-making metrics would include rate-payers.”
She says councillor Trevor Cunningham brought up the issue at the August 15 council meeting.
“At that time I presented some information around the length of time left on the contract with the current hauler, what the cost would be to add weekly green cart pick-up for the duration of the contract that is left. Then there were a few additional questions including working with the waste park to find out what the logistics would be around receiving weekly organics as opposed to receiving bi-weekly organics.”
