One municipal unit may turn down a funding proposal for dispatch service from the the Town of Yarmouth.
Last week the town sent a letter to fire chiefs in yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby counties offering a solution for a more equitable
cost-sharing arrangement.
Shelburne Mayor Karen Mattatall says while the council has not discussed the proposal, she has seen it.
She says they were getting a good deal at $100 a month and says it wasn’t totally fair to the Town of Yarmouth
“Although we absolutely appreciate the service, it has been wonderful and very supportive and we did have a very good deal. We had agreed initially that we didn’t mind paying more for it but the proposal that has come back is quite a significant amount more. In the range of $12,000 a year. Tt’s a bit difficult for us to go from $1200 a year to $12,000 a year.”
Mayor Mattatall says while the council has made no final decision, the proposed increase is concerning.
“We had hoped that we could have been contacted with an amount that was reasonable. Had it been four or five thousand dollars, we would have certainly, probably very quickly, chosen that option.”
