A local athlete is once again taking the ‘Big Swim.’
On Sunday, Bobby-Lou Reardon of Yarmouth will swim 14 kilometres in the Northumberland Strait along the Confederation Bridge.
She is one of 49 swimmers taking part in the annual fundraiser for Brigadoon Village, a non-profit recreation facility on Aylesford Lake in the Valley that helps deliver camp programming to children with chronic conditions or special needs.
Reardon says every kid deserves to go to camp.
“Swimming and raising money for Brigadoon, every thousand dollars we raise helps a child go to Brigadoon next summer.”
She says so far she’s raised $4,000, and the campaign’s total goal is to raise $150,000 this year.
“We’re up around $127,000 for the overall group so far. Usually I raise around $3,000 every year, but people have been very generous and I thank them for that, and for all the words of encouragement.”
Reardon has been involved in this event for five years, but swimmers have not been able to compete the journey the last two years due to poor conditions.
She was able to swim the distance in a local lake last year, as she was unable to get to New Brunswick due to a prior commitment.
But she says she’s looking forward to heading back this year.
