The Town of Yarmouth will not amend its solid waste by-law to allow front-yard storage units for solid waste.
Right now garbage, recyclables and green carts are only permitted to be contained in a side yard or backyard and must be brought to the curb on collection days.
A resident that had developed a front-yard storage unit requested a change to the by-law, but Mayor Pam Mood and several other council members were worried the units could be ‘unsightly.’
Mood says there were some different opinions at the table.
“We don’t want to penalize the folks that are doing it right. But the other thing is, we don’t need in the Town of Yarmouth, with everyone in close proximity, to have a garbage disposal unit on everyone’s front lawn. For tourists in this town, the last thing they need to do is walk by un-kept green carts and the smells that come with it.”
Councillors Wade Cleveland and Don Berry voted against keeping the by-law as-is, saying it’s not fair to punish those who are doing it right.
Mood says another challenge would be enforcement of the by-law change.
