The Town of Yarmouth is proposing a new funding formula in hopes of saving the Yarmouth dispatch service.
In a release, the town says they are prepared to support the local service, but it has attached a caveat.
It says an equitable formula must be agreed to by all volunteer fire departments served by the dispatchers.
The dispatchers serve over twenty fire departments in Shelburne, Yarmouth and Digby Counties.
The town recently rejected a funding formula drafted by five municipal units.
Mayor Pam Mood says, after meeting with area firefighters, municipal leaders may have missed something in the consideration of the dispatch service.
She says everyone, including the town, wants this to come to a successful conclusion and keep the four dispatchers in Yarmouth.
“We have just sent them a proposal and I believe a very easy one to accept. We hope that everyone will accept that and come together and we can continue as is, which would be absolutely wonderful.”
The town is proposing two variables for volunteer fire departments to consider.
It requires a written response by Monday September 24 of this year.
The town has informed the dispatchers that they will be laid off and the service will be outsourced for a better price.
Mayor Mood says they want to avoid that if at all possible.
