Many in our area are looking to protect our view of the night sky.
Yarmouth and Acadian Shores were named a “Starlight Destination’ by the International Starlight Foundation in 2014 for it’s clear view of the stars.
That designation runs out this year, and now an awareness campaign is on about light pollution.
Astronomer Tim Doucette of the Deep Sky Eye Observatory in Quinan says he’s confident the re-designation will happen.
“The municipal entities can create by-laws to protect our view. It’s almost putting the cart before the horse, sometimes you need the tourism part to grow and show that people are coming in order to help protect what we have.”
Doucette says over 1,000 people have visited the observatory in the last two years, some from as far away as Australia.
He presented to Yarmouth town council last week, as the town emits the most light pollution in our area.
“The light pollution is coming from town, but I’m confident after speaking with council that they’re going to do their best to reduce that.”
