The 235th anniversary of the Black Loyalist landing in Shelburne County will be celebrated July 14 and 15.
The Black Loyalist Heritage Centre and Historical Site in Birchtown is hosting the event.
Vanessa Hartley, program assistant at the centre, says the anniversary holds much significance to African Nova Scotians and is particularly important or young people.
“As we say here” your heritage comes from your roots and so does your knowledge and your power. It’s so important for young people to know where they came from because it’s not really taught in schools.”
The fourth annual Journey Back to Birchtown takes place on the Saturday.
The late Reverend William Pearly Oliver and his wife Dr. Pearleen Borden Oliver will be honoured this year.
They were leaders for social justice in Nova Scotia.
