Three young men got into some trouble in the water off the Port Maitland wharf Tuesday night.
They had constructed a make-shift raft at a nearby beach.
Daniel Deveau was on the wharf around 9 p.m. when things went bad.
He said the trio, who appeared to be in their early to mid 20’s, were about 800 metres from shore.
“I was on my phone to 911. The raft had capsized. They weren’t wearing life jackets and were fully clothed. They were having trouble keeping their heads about the water. They were hollering for help and you could hear the distress in their voices.”
Deveau says two women on the wharf grabbed some life rings off fishing boats, jumped into the water and pulled the three ashore.
Others helped get them on dry land and into a warm vehicle.
Deveau says they were treated by EHS for apparent hypothermia but did not appear to be seriously injured.
He says if there hadn’t been anyone else on the wharf, it could have turned out really bad.
Deveau says the three men were from the Port Maitland area
