A popular walking trail in Lockeport is off limits to the public.
Many residents like Cheryl Nickerson think the council needs to make it their number one priority.
She told Acadia News that’s it’s an important piece of infrastructure and used by many locals and tourists.
A section of the trail has been deemed unsafe by engineers.
The town first placed boulders to keep people out, but when that didn’t work, a fence was erected with a ‘no trespassing’ sign.
Prior to the fence going up, the town could have been held liable if anyone got hurt.
Mayor George Harding says, while it’s a beautiful asset, the causeway is its number one priority.
He says rising sea levels caused by climate change are taking its toll on the structure.
“Lockeport is very vulnerable because we are a peninsula and only connected by the causeway. The recommendations are that our number one priority is to upgrade that.”
Mayor Harding says upgrading the Old Calf Island Road is the second priority.
Lockeport’s water lines run under the road and which supplies Clearwater Seafood.
